Exit BG; on to Az

… had a wonderful visit in Bulgaria. Many contacts went out of their way to meet with us. Each one was helpful, resourceful and took great care of us. Each conversation helped us get a realistic view of BG at this time. That view is that basically there are needs everywhere.

Our representatives there need encouragement; their job is tough. Teams would be welcome in many places and the project opportunities are numerous. All asked, “when is your group coming back?”

Today was Easter Sunday in BG. We heard the relevant aspects of the resurrection were, “do not fear” and “go and tell.” Things are bleak in BG at this time. The future state and direction is uncertain. Food costs are high, government is corrupt, health care is limited and disorganized, education is deteriorating. The most educated emigrate, the birth rate is negative. Spiritually, most have no hope. Surveys indicate 74% of the population thinks, “visiting church brings no value to my life.”

BUT, can you think of any other bleak times in history? At one time there were just a handful of disciples and other followers in the world. Our Savior said, “do not fear, come to Me; I love you and I’ve proven it” (the resurrection.) Col 1 says, “… and the good news is going out everywhere, changing lives, just as yours when you first heard the news.” So, be hopeful!

Your gifts at work…
You sent us off with gifts for our representatives. We wish you could have seen the faces of four precious children as we presented them with cereal “variety packs.” You would thought they were receiving the most fantastic toy on Christmas morning. They were simply ecstatic.

  1. Hi-
I've been trying to connect. I thought I sent you something last night and this morning but I don't think it went through. I was hoping to connect before you went on to the next leg of your trip because I'm not sure what kind of access you'll have there. Nothing new to report, just wanted you to know we're keeping up with you and miss you. Glad to see you look well. Hopefully you are well rested and adjusted to new time. Talked with Anji this morning and they are both excited about moving back to Pinewood. PTL. They want to do a few improvements so we're talking that through.
Write when you can. Love you.

  2. Dear Donna and Herb,
We are praying for you for each day of travel and have been touched deeply by your evaluation of how things are in BG. And YES! we want to return if it be God's will for us to do so. May your return presentations stir the hearts of folks at NHC to partner in the King's work.
    Love, Kathie and Pete

  3. Dear Donna and Herb,
I'm really enjoying your blog. It really helps give a great perspective of what happening during your trip. It sounds like there is massive depression among the people. Harder to keep your spirit up with that all around you. All the more need for prayer. I'll keep praying.

    Love, Kathy
